The Pelican Rapids City Council was told on Sept. 10 that the library director, Annie, and two library board members — including Chair Cheryl Brena and a member identified as Sue (surname in transcript unclear) — submitted resignations effective immediately.
Administrator Lance Reyome told council the resignations mean the council will need to appoint two new library board members so the board can form a hiring committee and begin recruiting a new director. Lance said the board is responsible for hiring the director and that, once the council appoints board members, the library board will likely schedule a special meeting to move the hiring process forward.
There was brief confusion in the meeting about whether Annie had framed her message as vacation or a resignation; council members clarified that Annie had submitted notice and that her last day would be Sept. 28. Lance and other council members urged prompt appointments so the hiring process could proceed.
Why it matters: the library will be without its director and has lost board leadership; appointing board members is the first step to reconstituting the board and restarting the hiring process.
Next steps: council signaled it will identify and appoint two board members before the next council meeting so the library board can conduct a special meeting to begin director recruitment.
