Commission approves forgivable loan and two basement-backup grants for Hammond residents

The Hammond Redevelopment Commission approved three resident assistance awards at its Feb. 17 meeting.
Commissioners approved a conditional forgivable loan of $10,000 for Williams Ramos to purchase 6723 Bearing Avenue. Ramos said he is a first-time homebuyer and that he learned about the program from realtor Alex Garcia. The motion to approve the loan passed by a unanimous roll call vote.
The commission also approved two basement backup protection program grants: $3,395 to Isaac Diaz (1450 Atlas Street) and $5,250 to Sylvia Garcia (6632 Arkansas Avenue). Staff said the program is administered through Hammond Sanitary; Diaz and Garcia were not present and were asked to attend the March meeting. Both grants were approved on a 5–0 roll call.
Commissioners recorded no public objections during the meeting. Staff indicated applicants would be asked to appear at a follow-up meeting so the commission can meet them in person.
