Storm forces Nodaway 9 bridge closure; Adams County reports two bridges advance in state competitive program

Adams County Secondary Roads staff told the board on June 15 that high winds and severe weather earlier in the week caused trees and utility poles to fall across county roads, damaging structures and prompting road closures.
A tree fell onto Nodaway 9 and caused critical structural damage, forcing the county to close the Nodaway 9 bridge. Crews also reported three culverts washed out and said they are assisting debris cleanup in Prescott. Staff extended thanks to neighboring Adair and Taylor counties for equipment and assistance. The county reported that six scour‑critical bridges were inspected and passed inspection.
County staff said Adams County was one of six counties to have two bridges move into the Iowa Competitive Highway Bridge Program semi‑final list; the county received final plans for Union 17 and plans to let that project on July 7. Staff said they are still working to acquire right‑of‑way for the Prescott 10 bridge and are looking at an October letting.
The Sheriff and EMA reported during department updates that the June 5–11 storm event caused widespread damage to homes, outbuildings, trees and utilities in the county; the governor issued a disaster proclamation covering 11 Iowa counties including Adams County, and state resources (Iowa DOT) are assisting with debris removal. The Sheriff’s Office noted the K9 truck sustained damage; Deputy Carlson completed rifle instructor school and the department has ordered tasers.
Board actions following the update included approval of the Prescott 10 right‑of‑way contract.
