Pitt County backs NCDOT plan to convert NC 102/SR 1753 to all‑way stop to improve safety

The Pitt County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 12 endorsed North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to convert the intersection of NC 102 and SR 1753 (Stokestown‑St. Johns Road) from two‑way stop control to an all‑way stop control, citing crash history and traffic volume analysis.
Director of Planning Jonas Hill summarized NCDOT’s analysis, which identified nine reported crashes in a five‑year period at the intersection, four of which involved injuries. NCDOT’s recommended countermeasure — conversion to an all‑way stop control and associated signage and sight‑distance work — is intended to reduce crash occurrences and improve operational safety. NCDOT is expected to fund and carry out the modifications.
Commissioners voted to approve a resolution forwarding Pitt County’s support to NCDOT. The motion was made by Commissioner Chris W. Nunnally and seconded by Commissioner Gary Weaver; the board recorded the vote as unanimous.
The resolution will be forwarded to NCDOT for consideration and implementation according to engineering standards and safety protocols; no county funds were requested for the improvements at the meeting.
