Connersville board weighs restroom-hour changes and security after vandalism in park restrooms

Parks Superintendent Marla Steele told the Connersville Parks and Recreation Board on May 26 that staff have seen multiple vandalism incidents in park restrooms and are monitoring the areas with cameras.
"We encourage our community to report suspicious activity to the park office so we can immediately address the problems," Steele said. She said staff will discuss evaluating restroom hours as one possible response but emphasized that parents of minors should be held accountable for vandalism at times, and recommended calling 911 when incidents occur.
Board members debated options. President Amy Hammons said she did not feel it was fair to punish the public for others’ destruction and said minors’ parents should face consequences from prosecutors; board member Rob Ball said restrooms should remain open and that people must be held accountable. The board discussed Miller Building security options to protect office staff, including locking the office door and using the reception window for contact and locking the gym during Summer Discovery hours.
The board did not vote to change restroom hours at the meeting. Staff will undertake an evaluation and the item was left for future consideration.
