Flowood board grants two variances, approves personnel moves and MDOT aesthetics contract

FLOWOOD, Miss. — The Flowood mayor and Board of Aldermen on March 7 approved a pair of public-hearing variances, several personnel actions in the police department and a contract with the Mississippi Department of Transportation for aesthetic improvements to Highway 25.
At a public hearing, Building Official Mike Prestage explained an application by Allen Hawkins requesting a sign variance at Parcel 3, Lakeland Commons Phase 1, to allow 36-inch letters and a logo on the Sleep Number storefront. Hawkins spoke in favor and no one spoke in opposition. Alderman Dusty Rhoads moved to grant the variance “as set forth in the Application”; Alderman Kathy Smith seconded. The motion passed unanimously among the board members present (Mayor Gary Rhoads, Aldermen Kathy Smith, Kirk McDaniel and Dusty Rhoads).
Prestage also presented an application from LBD, LLC seeking a variance from the setback line on a utility easement for 2015 Lakeland Drive (Lot 3 of Lakeland Marketplace North Phase Two). Bud Hollomon spoke in favor. Alderman Kirk McDaniel moved to approve that variance; Alderman Dusty Rhoads seconded. The board approved the request unanimously.
The board approved a multi-item consent agenda that included approvals of minutes; multiple claims dockets (general claims, refuge golf course, Flowood R/C Park, Wirtz Road bike trail, water tank rehabilitation and regional storm drainage); ratification of changes to insurance agents and renewal dates; and festival entertainment contracts with Stagelite Entertainment Inc. for the Flowood Family Festival. The consent agenda also authorized a contract with Stagelite Sound, LLC in the amount of $19,980 to provide stage and equipment for the festival and authorized notice to the YMCA terminating a longstanding joint services agreement.
Chief Richie McCluskey requested approval of police personnel actions. The board approved promotion of Donald McBee from corporal to sergeant (Step 12); promotion of Aaron Messer from patrolman to corporal; hiring of Christopher Strickland as a patrolman (Step 5); hiring Brittney Gardner as a dispatcher (Step 1); and lateral transfer of Crystal Bradley from dispatcher to court services administrative assistant (Step 12). Alderman Kathy Smith made the motion to approve the personnel items; Alderman Dusty Rhoads seconded.
Public Works Director Garry Miller requested approval of a contract and agreement with the Mississippi Department of Transportation for aesthetic improvements along Highway 25; the board approved the contract. The board also approved final payment of $131,527.34 to the Rankin County Board of Supervisors for utility relocation on the Old Fannin Road Widening Project, as noted in the consent agenda.
With no further business, the board adjourned.
