Council approves rezoning of former Rice County jail annex to commercial

On Jan. 27 the Faribault City Council approved Ordinance 2026-01 on its second reading to rezone the former Rice County Jail annex from public institutional to commercial.
Staff described the change and recommended approval of both the ordinance and the required summary publication. The council held a short question period and then voted to approve the ordinance and the summary publication by roll call.
City staff noted there were no substantive changes since the previous reading and recommended approval to finalize the rezoning as proposed. The council approved the motion to adopt Ordinance 2026-01 and a separate motion to approve the summary publication.
The adoption changes the official zoning designation for the property. Staff will proceed with publication and any implementation steps required by local ordinance.
