Crown Point advances ordinance to let fire inspectors impose fines for code violations

At its May 4 meeting the Crown Point Common Council read in title only Ordinance No. 2026‑05‑13, an amendment to Code 91.99(A) that would authorize the Fire Department to impose fines for uncorrected fire-code violations.
Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner told the Council the current code allows fines for open burning but does not permit fines for other code violations such as blocked exit doors or unmaintained alarm and sprinkler systems; historically the State Fire Marshal was the last resort for enforcement. Under the proposed amendment, the department would be authorized to levy a $100 fine for a first offense, $250 for a second offense, and no more than $500 for a third offense if violations are not corrected in a timely manner.
Member Zack Bryan moved to read the ordinance in title only and hold it for a second reading; the motion passed by unanimous voice vote. The ordinance will return for formal consideration at the next meeting.
