EA meeting secures University of Minnesota technical assistance for Richmond Park flood-mitigation and recreation planning

The EA meeting in Madelia announced technical assistance from the University of Minnesota to develop a master plan for Richmond Park that would expand recreation while mitigating flood risk.
Dave Schmid said the city applied in November and that University of Minnesota staff visited the park this month with county members to walk the site and hold a public listening session. "We made a really big step forward this month," Schmid said, noting the visit and follow-up public session collected community priorities for future park design.
Staff highlighted possible priorities: restoring trails that previously existed, designing flood-resilient landscaping and erosion control, and relocating the splash pad to be visible during park events. The city plans workshops and a community survey to gather input; staff and partners will promote the survey at the Park Day booth.
Schmid said the project team will hold future workshops to refine design choices and that partners will plan outreach and a community survey to gather broader input. The city described the work as part of a multi-step master-plan process and said additional public engagement and design work will follow.
Next steps: staff will host workshops, launch the community survey at Park Day and return with findings to guide the park master plan.
