Redevelopment authority increases education grant to $50,000 and approves Maryville scope change

At the March 16 meeting the Hobart City Redevelopment Authority voted to increase its 2027 education and workforce training grant allocation from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a requested scope change for a Maryville School construction trades project.

Chair (S2) moved to raise the available grant from $30,000 to $50,000; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners said the added funds will support workforce development programming and hands‑on student projects.

A presenter (S6) read a letter submitted on behalf of Terrell Taylor, a construction trades instructor at Maryville High School, describing the revised project approach. The letter explained the program will now design and construct eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets (one per community school) rather than installing outdoor pantry boxes. As read in the meeting record, the letter said the indoor cabinets will protect donated goods from weather and vandalism, allow staff to manage distribution, and still provide students with carpentry and workforce experience.

The presenter and staff said the revised approach remains within the originally approved budget and would reduce liability and spoilage concerns associated with outdoor units. The commission voted to accept the revision and noted a copy of the letter had been received by email prior to the meeting.

Staff said they will continue to coordinate with Maryville School Corporation and local clubs to ensure the units meet school needs.
