Board approves Waterloo United Titans unification for several high‑school sports

The Waterloo Community School District board voted April 27 to unify six high‑school athletics programs under the Waterloo United Titans beginning with the 2026–27 school year, Superintendent staff and the Director of Secondary explained.
District athletic staff reported that participation numbers and coach availability—citing East High’s difficulty retaining a volleyball coach—motivated the consolidation recommendation. The unification will include volleyball, boys wrestling, boys and girls cross country, and boys and girls bowling; some sports (girls golf and soccer) were not included because participation and coaching levels met existing thresholds.
Director of Secondary Josh Peyton described preliminary practice schedules and coordination between East and West sites to keep games and administrative coverage distributed across the district. Board members asked about middle‑school impacts and communication to affected student‑athletes; staff said athletic directors at East and West have engaged parents and players and will expand outreach as plans firm.
The board approved the superintendent’s recommendation by voice vote.
