The Waterloo Community School District board on April 27 approved a three‑year collective bargaining agreement with the Waterloo Education Association covering July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.
District negotiators and WEA leadership reached terms that include a $250 flat payment for 2026–27 (not added to base), a $1,000 flat increase for 2027–28 (approximately 1.49%), and reopening base wage talks for the 2028–29 year. The agreement also restores language on grievance procedures, sick leave, professional development and seniority that had been removed in 2017, district staff said.
District leaders explained the contract reduces the certified staff work calendar from 190 to 185 days, moving the student calendar to end earlier in May, and adds a personal day plus emergency‑leave flexibility for catastrophic events. Additional parental leave language was included, the district said.
Board members and negotiators praised the collaborative bargaining effort. The board approved the superintendent’s recommendation by voice vote.
What it means: the contract provides modest flat increases while restoring negotiated protections and changing contract days and leave options. The district said the approach balances budget constraints with staff protections and will prompt issuance of teacher contracts if ratified administratively.
