The Waterloo Community School District board voted unanimously to post the Expo Alternative Learning Center building at 1410 Independence Avenue in Waterloo for sale.
The action followed a statutorily required public hearing on the proposed sale or disposal of district real property. The chair read the legal requirements for a public hearing under the Code of Iowa and invited public comment; with no objections the board moved to close the hearing by roll call.
During discussion of the sale agenda item later in the meeting, the superintendent and trustees stressed that Expo programming itself remains in the district and that students and staff had been transitioned to other sites such as Greenbrier. The board described the parcel as a larger piece of property with multiple acres (trustees referenced roughly 14 acres) and said an informal appraisal is available for board review.
"For those of you that aren't aware, we transitioned our students to the WCCX and to the Greenbryer sites prior to this," the superintendent said while presenting the item. Trustees asked for and were told an informal appraisal exists and that details of the parcel will be shared with board members.
The board approved the superintendent's recommendation to post the Expo building for sale; the motion carried on a roll-call vote.
