Fairmont Area School Board adopts 2026–27 calendar with Sept. 1 start

The Fairmont Area School Board voted March 24 to adopt the district’s 2026–27 school calendar after reviewing a draft compiled with input from district groups and the operations committee. The calendar adds two professional learning/inservice days (raising the district total to 12) while keeping student contact days above Minnesota’s 165-day minimum: 167 for elementary and 168 for the junior–senior high school.

Board members noted the school year will begin Tuesday, Sept. 1, in both 2026 and 2027, creating a four-day Labor Day weekend for families (the Friday of Labor Day weekend would be a no-school day). The board also confirmed graduation for the current junior class is scheduled for June 6, 2027, and cautioned that future cohorts may have different weekday dates for commencement.

Supporters said the calendar preserves required instructional time while giving teachers additional professional-development days and flexibility to use e-learning for inclement weather if needed. The board approved the calendar by voice vote; board members said the title on the motion would be corrected to reference 2026–27 in the agenda appendix.

The adopted calendar will be published in Appendix A of the meeting packet and the district plans to provide more details about specific inservice dates and any e-learning implementation nearer the start of school.
