Council approves micropaving contract to extend life of city streets; staff estimate ~12–15 miles coverage

Public works staff recommended on June 23 that Nixa enter a contract for micropaving as part of the city’s pavement preservation program for 2026. Staff described micropaving as a liquid-based preservation product with aggregate that fills cracks, slows oxidation of the roadway surface and can extend pavement life by five to 10 years when applied appropriately.
Councilmembers asked how many miles $450,000 would cover; staff said coverage varies by street width but that last year roughly 13 lane miles were treated for a similar amount and that average annual coverage could be 12–15 miles, depending on widths. Staff clarified the $700,000 figure discussed at prior meetings represented a full preservation program (a mix of micropaving, mill-and-overlay and full reconstruction) and that the micropaving contract is one component of that broader program.
Council discussed resident notification and vendor outreach; a councilmember suggested using QR-code signage that links to daily or hourly updates on work progress. Staff offered to provide FAQs and vendor information and said the procurement would include a not-to-exceed contract amount.
After public comment (one resident offered a tongue-in-cheek positive remark), the council approved the resolution to solicit and enter a micropaving agreement. The resolution authorizes entering into the contract and proceeding with procurement and resident notification as part of normal project execution.
Staff will return contract details and scheduling information to the council and execute public notifications prior to work in affected neighborhoods.
