Nehawka trustees approve permits, manhole covers and dust control; Elm Street striping fails

The Village of Nehawka Board of Trustees handled several routine and infrastructure items during its June 10 meeting.
Minutes and financial actions: Trustee Ian Begemann moved to approve the May 4 and May 13 meeting minutes; Trustee Tim Dineen seconded and all members present voted in favor. The board approved the treasurer's report and claims (motions by Begemann and Matt Anson, respectively) with unanimous votes of members present.
Permits and infrastructure: The board approved Building Permit 2026-3 for a house addition and single-car garage at 5480 Rita Lane after applicant Gene Monroe confirmed the addition (about 1,000 square feet) and that the permit had not been filed initially; the board contacted Cass County Zoning for inspection guidance before approving the permit. Trustees approved purchasing three manhole covers for locations on Nehawka Road by the sewer plant and at the community building and to keep a third used cover for future needs.
Roads and parking decisions: Trustees approved a one-time dust-control application on Conestoga Road for a quoted $1,250, payable from the Highway account; Trustee Pat Neu voted no and Chairman Chad Krueger abstained, but the motion carried with three votes in favor. A separate motion to stripe parking on Elm Street was proposed by Trustee Ian Begemann and seconded by Trustee Tim Dineen, but Trustees Matt Anson, Pat Neu and Chad Krueger voted no and the motion failed.
Other actions: The board approved refunding a water deposit for 320 North Street. Several items were tabled: Ordinance 2026-2 (adopting the Nebraska Basic Code) and installing water meters at the Community Building and United Methodist Church pending receipt of installation quotes. Trustees discussed but did not finalize plans for replacing three hydrants, noting limited funds remaining from COVID relief allocations.
The board adjourned at 8:11 p.m. and set follow-up on several items for upcoming meetings.
