Nehawka rescue squad reports staffing shortages; village insurance split in progress

At the June 10 meeting McKenna Sobota, speaking for the rescue squad, said the volunteer squad has had relatively few calls recently, is actively seeking drivers and is trying to reestablish regular meeting schedules after complaints about infrequent meetings.
"Looking and need drivers," Sobota said, and noted the squad has received a new rescue applicant who is currently on the fire department roster.
Trustee Pat Neu provided an insurance update, saying the village's insurance agent is working to split the fire and rescue policy; she emphasized the rescue squad remains covered while the agent completes that work. Neu also told trustees a claim for rear-end damage was filed in March 2026 and discussed the possibility of setting a minimum dollar threshold for rescue claims.
Trustees did not take formal action on staffing or on insurance at the June 10 meeting but discussed ways to encourage regular meetings and recruitment. The board asked staff and rescue leadership to continue scheduling efforts and to provide follow-up information about coverage and any proposed policy changes at a later meeting.
The issue affects emergency response capacity for Nehawka and the board signaled it will monitor recruitment and insurance changes in coming weeks.
