Nehawka board raises minimum water and sewer charges to bolster revenues

The Village of Nehawka Board of Trustees on June 10 adopted Ordinance 2026-1 to increase the village's minimum water and sewer charges.
Pat Neu, acting clerk/treasurer, outlined the proposed change to the board: the minimum water charge will become $41.00 per 3,000 gallons and the minimum sewer charge $42.00 per 3,000 gallons. Rates for usage above the 3,000-gallon minimum are unchanged, remaining at $7.00 per 1,000 gallons for water and $2.00 per 1,000 gallons for sewer.
Trustee Ian Begemann moved to adopt Ordinance 2026-1; Trustee Matt Anson seconded. All members present voted in favor and the motion carried.
The ordinance is intended to increase revenue available for the water and sewer systems. During the meeting residents raised concerns elsewhere on the agenda about whether current rates are adequate for long-term infrastructure needs; resident John Henderson said water and sewer rates are "too low for infrastructure improvements." The board did not take additional action on that concern at the meeting.
The board also tabled Ordinance 2026-2, which would adopt the Nebraska Basic Code of Ordinances, pending receipt of the draft document. The adoption of Ordinance 2026-1 takes immediate effect per the board's action unless the ordinance text specifies a different effective date.
