A Danville resident left a voicemail with Town Hall about a strong odor near a trail entrance to the Town Forest, and the Forestry Committee addressed that complaint at its June 16 meeting.
The minutes state the caller lives at 16 Ward Way but did not attend the meeting. Member Josh Manning inspected the trail area, opened the trail near the complaint location and weed‑whacked surrounding vegetation. Manning reported the smell is normal for this time of year and is caused by the natural decomposition of organic material in the adjacent wetlands; he also noted that the trail access is over a private easement outside the Town Forest.
The committee recorded concerns about historical, uncoordinated placement of signage and other attachments in the Town Forest that were embedded into trees with spikes, bolts and metal hardware. To address both the signage clutter and increasing reports of unauthorized motorized vehicle use on walking trails, the committee voted to authorize member Tim Cain to remove items from trees and ground using his discretion and agreed that Chip Current and Tim Cain should engage with Selectman Joe Hester to settle signage and enforcement; Selectmen will be invited to the next committee meeting in three weeks.
Minutes show the motion to authorize removals was made by Chair Carsten Springer and was seconded (the minutes list the seconder as "John" while the attendance list shows "Jon Haskell"); the minutes do not provide individual vote tallies, recording only "All in favor." The resident who raised the odor concern did not attend to provide additional details; the committee recorded the inspection, the environmental explanation, and the plan to follow up on signage and enforcement.
