Council to pursue a 28E agreement and grant options for a school resource officer

Officials said the district requested an SRO and the city would seek COPS grant funding in May to backfill that position; if the grant is not awarded the city would be responsible for about 25% of the officer’s cost while the school district would cover the remaining 75%. The proposed SRO would split time between school duties (about three quarters of the school year) and city duties during the summer, and the officer would undergo a weeklong required SRO training before beginning school assignments.
Council members voiced support for the program, highlighting relationship-building and educational roles alongside safety duties, and asked staff to provide draft 28E agreement language for council review in March.
