West Burlington council approves Maul Road overlay contract, hires officers and passes routine financing resolutions

Council voted to approve the Maul Road HMA overlay contract after staff said they would meet with the contractor to confirm a proposed start date and consider whether work could begin this year. The roll-call vote showed all present council members voting in favor.
Council also approved two resolutions to hire police officers, bringing the department closer to full staffing. Staff noted one of the new officers is coming from the Burlington Police Department. Colleagues acknowledged the hire during the meeting and welcomed the incoming officer.
In other business, the council approved several annual internal-advance resolutions used to move funds within the city’s urban-renewal/TIF framework: an internal advance of $6,500 for engineering on the Mall Road overlay project; a $76 internal advance for legal fees on the same project; and a $1,474 advance for professional services tied to a proposed trail project. The council additionally approved an internal loan of $3,500 to update the Greater Burlington Partnership economic development agreement.
Council authorized the sale of surplus equipment and approved the purchase of playground equipment for Pat Klein and Lewis Park from PlayPro, discussed at an approximate purchase price of $18,800. Staff noted existing grant-funded playground components may be reused where compatible to lower replacement costs.
The motions were carried by roll-call or voice votes as recorded in the meeting; staff will proceed with contract administration, hiring paperwork and routine financing steps as approved.
The council’s consent to these items was part of an otherwise largely procedural meeting that included staff reports on public-works activity and community events. Several items that involved discussion but no formal decision (notably the Long Meadow water-main options and the TIF-collection timing) were deferred for further information and future action.
