Glassport secures community garden grant, prepares LSA building work and reports on fire, senior and public programs

Glassport Borough Council on Jan. 21 highlighted a series of community programs and grants: a $25,000 Allegheny Together grant will fund a community garden at the old St. Cecilia site; the borough will advertise for bids on ceiling-tile and light-fixture replacement under an $850,000 LSA grant; and the Fire Department received a FEMA grant to fund a fitness center expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.

Councilmembers listed 2025 GDC event dates: concerts on June 14 and July 12, Community Day on Aug. 16 and a Car Show on Sept. 6. The Giant Eagle Mobile Market continues weekly and Tree Pittsburgh will start spring plantings at the old swimming pool site. Senator Pisciottano’s staff inspected space intended as a satellite office for residents; a start date will be announced after paperwork is finalized.

On public safety and senior services, the Fire Department reported 44 calls in December and 596 calls for 2024, plus 1,258 training man-hours. The department obtained a staffing study from the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute recommending a stipend program to staff the station; the department said it is pursuing funding options to implement that recommendation. The Senior Center began computer classes on Jan. 13 (Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon for ten weeks) with 25 participants; free tax-preparation service will be available later in the year.

These community investments and programs were presented as part of routine committee reports and informational items; council voted to advertise required bids and to approve modest community donations at the same meeting. The next Safety Meeting is scheduled for Jan. 30, 2025.
