Owner presents demolition contract; commissioners rescind removal order for Main Street building

The Dubois County Commissioners on May 5 reversed an earlier order to remove a dilapidated portion of a building on Main Street after the property owner provided a demolition contract and a timetable for work.
Health Administrator Shawn Werner and Environmental Health Specialist Christina Pierini reported on the unsafe condition at 5390 Main Street in Dubois and that the owner, Rob Slotten, had not been present earlier in the meeting. The board initially authorized removal of the unsafe portion, solicitation of contractor bids, and a $1,200 fine due within 15 days; the fine was to be deposited into the Unsafe Building Fund.
At about 9:30 a.m. Mr. Slotten appeared and presented a signed contract with a contractor to demolish the dilapidated portion beginning no later than May 25, 2025, and to complete work by June 15, 2025. Given that information, the commissioners voted to rescind the previous removal order, allow Mr. Slotten to proceed with his contract, and postpone enforcement of the fine pending completion of the work. Mr. Slotten is required to return to the commissioners on June 16, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. for follow-up.
County Attorney Gregory S. Schnarr will send a letter to Mr. Slotten explaining the findings; the county will solicit bids for removal only if the contract is not completed as stated.
