Granite City CUSD 9 altered its approved 2627 district calendar after administrators explained that House Bill 1832 was amended on June 1, 2026 to confirm schools are not required to close for the Nov. 3, 2026 general election.
To comply with the updated legislation, the administration recommended keeping schools open on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026 as a regular student attendance day and shifting the last day of the school year from Friday, May 21, 2027 to Thursday, May 20, 2027. The change was presented as a way to maximize instruction in November and close the year one day earlier.
The board moved, seconded and approved the calendar amendment by roll call. No separate procedural accommodations for voting (e.g., releasing students for polling) were detailed in the materials presented at the meeting.
Administration said the district originally approved the 2627 calendar on Sept. 23, 2025 and proposed this amendment after the state law change; the board approved the requested amendment during the meeting.
