Commission approves invasive-species management in Pratty Woods with herbicide waiver

On June 23 the Littleton Conservation Commission voted to issue a Negative Determination (ND3) and to approve a waiver permitting targeted herbicide applications for invasive-species management at Pratty Woods (CEIP-funded, ~43 acres).
A forester who wrote the management plan explained the approach: spot treatments with licensed applicators using backpack sprayers and cut-stump techniques when needed, chosen because mechanical removal at scale would re-disturb soils and encourage resprouting. The plan listed target species including barberry, Japanese knotweed, bittersweet, multiflora rose and reed canary grass and emphasized spot spraying and limited, site-appropriate herbicide selection for wetter areas.
Commissioners pressed for clear public communication and signage during treatments, assurances that licensed applicators and state-approved herbicides will be used, and conditions that treatments will conform to Massachusetts law. The motion passed with one commissioner recusing. Staff will require documented applicator licensing, a schedule for public notification at Commission meetings, and signage/detour plans around treated trails.
The commission framed the vote as approval of a management approach rather than blanket approval of all future actions; the applicant will submit more detailed work plans and maps showing specific application locations and timing.
