Rolfe mayor asks county to review 28E patrol fee as local budgets tighten

Rolfe Mayor Jim Pentico told the Pocahontas County Board of Supervisors that Rolfe’s city clerk resigned for health reasons and that the city will reopen hiring. Pentico also raised the upcoming June 2025 expiration of Rolfe’s 28E agreement with the Sheriff’s Office and asked whether the county could reduce the city’s annual fee because local budgets are constrained.
Pentico suggested possible options including per‑capita billing or lowering patrol hours. County officials noted that cutting patrol hours would not substantially reduce Rolfe’s fee because the county hired an additional deputy when 28E agreements were expanded to include Rolfe and Fonda. Chairman Kyle Smith asked Sheriff Steve Nelson to compile cost numbers for the Board to review and the county will follow up with the mayor.
No change to the current 28E agreement was made at the Nov. 19 meeting; the Board expects Sheriff Nelson to present financial details for further discussion before the agreement expires in June 2025.
