Comfrey council approves minutes, bills and donations; sells police squad and applies for radar-speed signs grant

At its Feb. 11 meeting the Comfrey City Council approved routine minutes, bills and reports; accepted donations; approved selling a police squad “as is” for $10,000 if no outside interest; and unanimously agreed to apply for Brown County’s SHIP radar-speed-sign grant.
The City Council of Comfrey met Feb. 11 and approved routine business including minutes, bills and the annual financial report.
On consent: councilors voted unanimously to approve the Jan. 7, 2025 meeting minutes, accept total bills of $34,637.01, approve a resolution accepting donations to the fire department, first responders and library, and accept the January financial report. Clerk Kelly also reviewed the annual report, which the council approved.
The council revisited the possible sale of the police squad car. Mayor Richter said she would contact Lamberton one more time; councilors discussed posting the vehicle for bids and noted that removing full decals and equipment would add expense. The council approved a motion by Councilor Arnsdorf, seconded by Councilor Kastner, authorizing sale of the vehicle “as is” to a security company for $10,000 if Lamberton does not express interest.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Department plans to apply for a SHIP grant to install two radar speed signs — one in Comfrey and one in Hanska. The city’s required one-time contribution, if any, could range from $0 to $500. Councilor Evers moved and Councilor Kastner seconded a motion to apply for the SHIP grant; the motion carried unanimously.
There were no new updates on the cannabis agreement with the counties; Attorney Paul Muske said he would look into the matter further. First Responder Captain Jill Veerkamp reminded the council about a chili feed fundraiser on March 2, 2025. The meeting adjourned at 7:33 PM.
