Cokato council approves Akerlund Studio renovation bid, advances watermain work and routine business

Cokato — At its Aug. 19 meeting the Cokato City Council approved moving ahead with renovations to the Akerlund Studio, approved the consent agenda including Resolution 2024-24 naming election judges, and advanced several public-works items including a consensus to pursue a watermain extension to Pleasant Avenue NE.
Council members reported two bids for the Akerlund Studio renovation — one for approximately $297,000 and a lower bid of about $143,185 — and noted bids were roughly $15,000 over estimates because of time and materials. On a motion by Council Member Wilson, seconded by Council Member Sebring, the council voted unanimously to proceed with the work and begin construction this fall.
The consent agenda, moved by Council Member Wilson and seconded by Council Member Erickson, included approval of minutes from the July 8 meeting, the sheriff's report and Resolution 2024-24, which names election judges for the general election; the council recorded a unanimous vote in favor. Council also approved a pay application for the Ailie Avenue public-works project after Potter recommended payment.
On infrastructure, staff reported that property owners contacted about the proposed watermain extension from Omer Avenue to Pleasant Avenue NE were not interested; Mayor Harju said the city still should move forward and the council agreed to advance the project (the minutes record consensus rather than a formal roll-call vote).
Council received the Cokato Museum quarterly report — museum staff said the studio project was progressing and that the museum drew more than 800 visitors during the corn carnival — and discussed planning-and-zoning guidance on residential storage containers and asphalt surface areas, directing staff to research rules and return with recommendations.
