The Clarkfield City Council on Jan. 6 approved an emergency repair to Well No. 6 after a contractor’s inspection found worn components that exceed planned 2026 replacements.
Public Works Director Troy Bruflat told the council that Thein Well recommended replacing the pump, a check valve and the drop pipe, and that additional wear to the Pitless unit and a 6x4 nipple meant the repair scope grew beyond the original plan. "This is what we planned for replacement in 2026. What I did not anticipate is that the Pitless unit and 6x4 nipple would have significant wear and need replacement," Bruflat said.
Thein Well’s estimate for the full set of repairs is $41,961. Mayor Darrin Johnson asked about budget authority; City Administrator Jonathan Pierce said the expense was not in the current budget but could be covered by committed water and sewer funds. The council approved the emergency repair on a motion by Councilmember Josh Hanson, seconded by Councilmember Kevin Kaatz; the motion carried.
The repair was described as urgent equipment replacement to maintain the city’s water supply; the council did not provide a line-by-line funding breakdown at the meeting. Next steps described in the discussion included authorizing Thein Well to proceed with the repairs and drawing the funds from the city’s committed water/sewer accounts.
