Bernalillo declares extreme drought, enacts temporary fireworks limits under Fire Safety Ordinance 329

Fire and Rescue Chief Michael Carroll presented Resolution 06/27/2022C at the June 27 meeting, and the Governing Body adopted it by unanimous roll-call vote. The resolution declares the town to be experiencing extreme drought conditions and cites Fire Safety Ordinance 329 as authority for restrictions.
The resolution specifies several temporary measures: a ban on the sale and use of missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices within the affected area; a limitation that allows other fireworks only on paved or barren areas or where a readily accessible source of water is available; a ban on fireworks in wildlands after consultation with the state forester; and the power to ban or restrict display fireworks. The resolution is effective for 30 days and the governing body may issue subsequent resolutions if extreme conditions persist.
Chief Carroll told the council the department will have crews patrolling for illegal fireworks over the upcoming holiday weekend and asked residents to call 911 or the non-emergency number (505)891-7226 to report concerns so crews can educate residents about what is allowed.
