Cleveland council approves hire for public works helper and holds closed-session personnel reviews

Acting Mayor Tonya Schummer called the City of Cleveland special council meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2026. Council Members Nancy Gens, Anne Hiller and Sarah McCabe and City Clerk-Treasurer Charles Hodge were present; Mayor Don McCabe was absent.
Council Member Sarah McCabe moved, and Nancy Gens seconded, to approve the meeting agenda; the motion carried with all recorded votes in favor. The council then voted to hire Bennett Gehrke for the Public Works Helper position, starting at $26.00 per hour. The motion to approve Gehrke’s hire was made by Nancy Gens, seconded by Sarah McCabe and recorded as passing unanimously among those present.
The special meeting recessed at 5:36 p.m. to conduct a closed session for annual performance reviews of five city positions: City Clerk-Treasurer, Assistant City Clerk, Public Works Director, Police Chief and Head Bartender. The minutes state the council did not make any motions during the closed session. At 6:25 p.m., Nancy Gens moved and Anne Hiller seconded to adjourn the closed session; that motion was recorded as passing with all recorded votes in favor.
The meeting was called back to order at 6:26 p.m. on a motion by Sarah McCabe, seconded by Anne Hiller, which passed unanimously. Anne Hiller then moved, and Sarah McCabe seconded, to adjourn the special meeting; the motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 6:28 p.m. The minutes are signed by Acting Mayor Tonya Schummer and City Clerk-Treasurer Charles Hodge.
