St. Louis County K9 ‘Thor’ demonstrates obedience and tracking at Eveleth event

EVELETH — A St. Louis County K9 handler brought police dog Thor to demonstrate obedience, control commands and operational functions at the opening of Eveleth’s new community center.
The handler instructed the audience to give the dog space and explained Thor is a working dog trained to obey commands that aid officer safety. During the demonstration the handler used both Czech commands (the dog was bred and initially trained in the Czech Republic) and English, and explained the transition between languages as part of the dog’s socialization.
The handler described the unit’s training regimen: an initial training course of about 13 weeks when the dog begins service, with ongoing training and socialization that can extend—he said on average—up toward 18 months for broader operational readiness. The handler said the county maintains four dual-purpose K9s (general patrol and detection) and two single-purpose K9s dedicated to drug detection.
In an onstage exchange the handler said he takes the dog home and described close handler–dog bonds, adding that dogs are rewarded during training and that obedience under stress helps control suspects. The handler also joked with the crowd about a theatrical “cookie thief” scenario while emphasizing that Thor is a working dog and should not be treated as a pet during demonstrations.
