Eveleth Awards Sidewalk Contract, Approves Utility Change Order and Arch Demolition

The Eveleth City Council on April 20 approved several infrastructure actions: awarding the 2026 curb-and-sidewalk replacement contract to 3D Concrete, authorizing change order 24 on a multi-million-dollar corridor utility project and accepting a low bid to remove a deteriorating downtown arch.

Jerry presented two bids for curb and sidewalk work and said the city is contributing $30,000 while the county is contributing another $15,000 for certain routes; staff recommended 3D Concrete as the lower bidder and the council approved the award. ‘‘3D concrete came in with the lower prices. So, I am recommending 3D get this again this year,’’ Jerry said.

On the large corridor project, staff reported that ledge rock and an unexpected culvert were encountered and that the city added a valve to limit water disruption to nearby businesses. Alan summarized the utility portion of a $22 million investment and said the change order attributable to the city was approximately $50,260.23, funded by grant sources for the project; the council authorized the change order.

For downtown, staff presented two demolition proposals to remove a deteriorating arch structure adjacent to businesses. Council approved the lower bid and discussed protections for the adjacent chiropractor and bar during a brief closure; staff said the contractor is insured and will coordinate with police to close that block only as needed.

All approvals were made by voice vote; staff will coordinate scheduling, street-closure notices and business outreach before any work begins.
