Eveleth leaders move to accelerate grocery-store redevelopment on old school site

The Eveleth Economic Development Authority reported March 2 that work is advancing on a planned grocery-store redevelopment at the city’s old school site.
Councelor Little, who attended the EDA meeting, said city staff, entrepreneurs and engineers met to review the project and that attendees left “highly enthused” about the direction and timeline. The EDA plans to make the site a priority, meet every couple of weeks and pursue early remediation and demolition so redevelopment can proceed.
Officials identified Tad Sweden of Bolton & Menk as the consultant who prepared a contract to provide project-management and cost-control services. The city attorney reviewed the contract with minor edits; the EDA plans a special meeting to approve it and begin work. Council members said initial site work will focus on environmental remediation and removing materials ahead of construction.
City staff told the council the ILR grant the city recently moved to apply for will fund much of the engineering and site-preparation work. Council members said preliminary plans envision as many as about 23 homes plus an apartment complex on parts of the parcel, though final plans and approvals remain to be completed.
The EDA asked residents to expect early activity — including a dumpster and visible demolition work — and said the authority will coordinate meetings and post updates for the public.
