Stormwater staff outlines trout stocking, prescribed burns and ways residents can reduce spring flooding

At its Jan. 14 meeting, the Tree and Storm Water Advisory Board heard a stormwater report from Mike covering seasonal operations and public-safety reminders.
Mike said trout will be stocked on March 20 at Ly Center Pond and reminded anglers that a trout stamp is required. He described planned controlled (prescribed) burns to manage vegetation: staff plans to burn at S Centennial Park (a site not burned last year because of construction) and to attempt a larger burn in the Goose Lake area (the northwest corner of town by Heartland Trucking); weather and permit conditions determine whether burns can proceed and staff noted that last year wind and wetter conditions prevented full completion.
Mike advised residents to clear accumulated snow and ice from storm-intake grates where it is safe to do so, to reduce localized flooding during rapid spring melts. He also recommended using only small amounts of salt on sidewalks and driveways to limit runoff into ponds and Muddy Creek and said literature is available from the city office for residents seeking guidance on salt application.
When asked about SQR (street/quality repair) funding, Mike said about $6,000–$7,000 remains available for spring projects and that the funding balance refreshes on July 1 for fall work. The report included no new regulatory actions; items discussed were operational and advisory in nature.
