McCreary County Board of Education approves bids, dedicates Central High agricultural wing and signs off on school closeout forms

The McCreary County Board of Education on June 23 approved a series of routine procurement and project-closeout items, voted to dedicate Central High School’s agricultural wing to a longtime local educator, and entered an executive session on pending litigation before returning to open session with no action taken.

Superintendent Dr. Taylor opened the recognitions portion of the meeting by introducing “Miss Jojo,” whom the superintendent described as “the state champion in the 100200 meter back-to-back years, 25 and 26,” and invited her forward for a photo with the board. The board also received routine personnel and finance reports; the treasurer reported a general-fund ending balance of approximately $12.665 million, with routine receipts from tax payments, grant reimbursements and transfers to cover bond payments.

During action items, a board member moved to dedicate the agricultural wing at Central High School to two local contributors discussed during the meeting; the motion was seconded and approved. “Those two folks have had a great impact on lots and lots of young individuals and kind of helped shape their lives,” Chair Braxton said when describing the proposal to name the facility.

The board also considered procurement items. Staff reported that one responsive bid was received for new wrestling mats (floor and wall matting) and recommended awarding the purchase to Sports Bin; the board approved the recommendation. For a separate RFP to demolish the Smithtown property, staff said six companies submitted proposals and recommended awarding the work to Greg Phillips of Greg’s Escavating (transcript spelling varies); the board approved that award as well.

On capital projects, board members reviewed BG4/PG4 closing documents for the McCreary County Middle School project—forms the architect submits to the Kentucky Department of Education to close out construction—and voted to approve those documents so the district may finalize the project files.

Later in the meeting the board voted to enter an executive session citing the Kentucky Open Meetings statute provision for discussion of pending litigation (KRS 61.810(1)(c)). The board returned to open session and announced that no action was taken while in executive session. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for July 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the central office and adjourned.

The meeting record shows routine approvals and procurement consistent with district operations; no substantive policy changes or budget reallocations were adopted at this meeting.
