Dubois County Solid Waste board approves April and May claims, hears grants and equipment updates

JASPER, Ind. — The Dubois County Solid Waste Management District Board approved payment of claims for April and May and handled routine business at its May 19 meeting in the Courthouse Annex Commissioners/Council Room.
Board member Serice Stenftenagel moved to accept the April and May claims as presented; the motion was seconded by board member Vince Helming and was approved unanimously by the five attending board members: Serice Stenftenagel, Chad A. Blessinger, Nick Hostetter, Sonya Haas and Vince Helming. Chad A. Blessinger later moved to approve the minutes from the March 17, 2025 meeting; Serice Stenftenagel seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
District Director Carla Striegel–Winner told the board she will prepare the proposed 2026 budget by June 10 so members can review it before the board’s next meeting on June 16. She reported there were not sufficient surplus funds to justify placing district funds into investments at this time.
Striegel–Winner also reported the district recently purchased two trucks — a 2022 Ford E350 and a 2017 Dodge Ram Tradesman — and distributed invitations for an invitation-only guided VIP tour of the Patoka Lake Water Plant scheduled for June 17.
On grants, Striegel–Winner gave brief status updates: the IDEM Waste Tire Grant (2025) has the required state signatures and is awaiting the execution notice; the IDEM Recycling Market and Development Program (RMDP) may be pursued by the county highway department; the IDEM Community Recycling Grant Program (CRGP) has been executed and staff will begin work; and the IDEM SWIFR grant is not being canceled as previously reported and Striegel–Winner plans to apply but said she will confirm federal funding availability before spending any awarded funds.
The board was also informed that one property will be brought before the County Commissioners in June for a property-maintenance/dumping issue and that the Dubois County Health Department has assumed lead on a separate property matter.
Staff summarized recent outreach and collection events, including an April 26 medication collection that yielded 392 pounds of material, an Earth Day fair that drew roughly 150 people, and several upcoming community events including a June 7 Hike and Learn at the Jasper Farmers Market and 4‑H Fair recycling activities in July.
Controller Martha A. Wehr was not present and will provide the next financial update at the June 16 meeting. County Attorney Gregory S. Schnarr and Advisory Board member Randy Boehm were listed as in attendance. The meeting was called to order by board member Nick Hostetter at 7:30 a.m. and adjourned at 8:20 a.m. after a motion to adjourn by Vince Helming and a second by Serice Stenftenagel.
