Pat, a city staff member, told council the county’s traffic engineer asked for municipal support for a grant to study options — including closure, building an overpass/underpass, or other separation measures — aimed at reducing crashes and long traffic delays when trains block crossings.
Council members recounted instances of significant delays caused by long freight trains and noted occasional crashes near those crossings. The chief said police responses to incidents in the area are infrequent but the county handles most patrols; council nonetheless supported coordination. Members agreed to sign a standard resolution and a letter of support for the county’s application.
The motion carried by voice vote. The council did not specify direct funding commitments; the action was limited to supporting the county’s planning application and agreeing to sign the necessary paperwork.
