Eveleth backs easement for Progress Parkway and prioritizes Alice site in regional brownfields bid

The Eveleth City Council on Jan. 21 approved an easement agreement with St. Louis County to allow Progress Parkway to pass through land behind the city (near the old dump) to connect Highway 37 with a planned roundabout and the school. Council members said the corridor will add an emergency access route and support future industrial development.
Members also voted to support inclusion of city projects in a multi‑community brownfields grant application being coordinated by the Rams Group. Councilors and staff prioritized the "Alice" property for initial testing and remediation work; other candidate sites mentioned included a closed restaurant parcel, a closed gas-station site and a former snow-dump area near Hatrick Drive. Staff said the application narrative was due the next day and that Paul Peltier of the Rams Group and consultant Rick Crum could help finalize the submission.
City Administrator Pat said the brownfields work is intended to produce testing and technical answers about contaminated land and that successful applications typically fund assessment and planning rather than full cleanup. Separately, EDA staff reported they have closed on the grocery-store property and are preparing demolition, roof replacement and site work with potential reimbursement through ITRB; councilors said project activity should be visible this spring.
Next steps: staff will work with the Rams Group to submit the brownfields narrative by the stated deadline and will return to council on Feb. 2 with staff answers related to Progress Parkway deliverables requested by St. Louis County.
