Interim Library Director Jessie Schafer says staff cut will fund e-books, maintenance and charging station

Interim Library Director Jessie Schafer told the West Branch City Council on Jan. 22 that the library’s proposed FY2025 budget reduces one full-time position to free funds for expanded digital collections, building maintenance and new equipment.

Schafer said the adjustment will allow the Library Board to invest more in e-books and to increase spending on sidewalk repairs, cleaning contracts and other building maintenance. She said the library plans to purchase three Chromebook computers — "one was for staff and the other two were for patron use" — and described a planned outdoor charging station as "well protected, can be locked, and are weather proof."

The change in staffing was presented as a trade-off to move resources toward items Schafer described as higher priority for patrons. Councilmembers asked about the technology purchases and building upkeep during the presentation; Schafer responded that the technology purchases are intended to increase patron access to devices.

The council did not take a formal vote on the library budget at the work session. City Administrator Adam Kofoed asked council members to complete a strategic planning worksheet in advance of the Feb. 5 meeting, when the council is expected to revisit levy and budget decisions with more formal direction.
