Prairie City schedules Aug. 13 hearings on three water and collections ordinances

The Prairie City Council on July 9 set public hearings for Aug. 13, 2025 at 6 p.m. in City Hall on three ordinances affecting water metering and utility collections.
Ordinance 410 would require installation of PEX wiring to enable electronic communication of water meters. Ordinance 411 would create an option for residents to rent a city water meter for filling swimming pools. Ordinance 412 would provide an option for city staff to use the Iowa SetOff program to collect on delinquent utility accounts and other late payments. Council member Deb Townsend moved to set each hearing; motions were seconded and carried unanimously.
The hearings will give residents an opportunity to comment before any ordinance is adopted. The motion to set the hearings does not itself change current city code; it schedules public consideration and formal comment.
The city clerk will publish notices and include ordinance language in the hearing packet ahead of Aug. 13.
