Burlington Community School District Superintendent Rob Scott and curriculum director Corey Johnson briefed the council on how the district used a prior $97,500 award from the economic development committee to equip and expand career and technical education (CTE) following a $45 million high‑school renovation.
Corey Johnson provided a program breakdown: about $31,000 for science equipment, $21,000 for computer labs, $18,000 for health occupations (including additional patient beds and simulation equipment used in a clinic‑style learning environment tied to South Eastern Community College partnerships), roughly $13,000 for industrial/technology shop areas, $12,000 for family and consumer science and approximately $2,000 to start a cosmetology program (chairs, sink basins). Johnson also noted replacement of an outdated autoclave (1974 model) and that some funds went to create new programs while other portions updated aging equipment.
Board president Anukica McVey and council members praised the partnership between the district and city staff (inspectors, fire personnel) on the renovation and encouraged council members to visit Burlington High School to see program benefits firsthand. No formal council action was taken during the briefing.
Next steps: informational only; district representatives left the council meeting for their own board meeting.
