Solid-waste employee and commissioners agree on CDL timeline extension and training support
Summary
County solid-waste staff asked for clarification about CDL requirements and timing; the board agreed to allow the employee to focus on current transition work and to extend the deadline for completing parts of the CDL, while keeping the requirement on the record and asking the employee to pursue the written test by year-end.

During the Sept. 15 meeting, solid-waste staff raised questions about the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements attached to an employee's job description. The affected employee said transitional work at the transfer station makes it difficult to complete driving training now and requested an extension.
Board members acknowledged the operational needs at the transfer station, offered to "bend" deadlines where reasonable, and said they expected continued progress: staff recommended the employee take the written portion this winter and complete the driving portion in spring. "If it's a must I'll do it. I just feel like it's not the right time to juggle both," the employee said. The board agreed to document the extension in the minutes so the record reflects the timeline and the county's expectations.
County staff offered specific supports: practical guidance on where to find study materials and direction that supervisors could arrange ride-alongs and practice time. Commissioners also said that if cost is a barrier the county could discuss assistance.
No formal personnel action was taken; the board reiterated that the requirement remains and that the employee should keep supervisors informed of progress so the record can reflect accommodations and any future enforcement steps if required.
The board asked staff to continue monitoring training progress and to include the update in future meeting minutes.
