Prairie City Council adopts yard-waste ordinance, approves utility rate increase and multiple infrastructure actions

At its May 14 meeting the Prairie City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 407 on yard waste, adopted Ordinance 408 to raise utility rates effective July 1, 2025, and approved several CIP additions, vendor invoices and project authorizations including sewer repairs, tennis-court design and UV system parts.
The Prairie City Council on May 14 voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 407 addressing yard waste and tree debris disposal and Ordinance 408 raising utility rates, and to authorize several infrastructure and funding actions included in the fiscal-year planning.
Mayor Pro Tem Deb Townsend presided. Council Member Derek Ingle moved to approve final consideration and adoption of Ordinance 407; Council Member Joe Disney seconded, and the measure carried unanimously. The council then approved Ordinance 408, which the council recorded as effective July 1, 2025.
The council approved a consent agenda that included financial reports, multiple vendor invoices (including Accurate Commercial $27,426.55 and CIT invoices totaling $32,943.75), permits for Casey’s tobacco and the Farmers Market, Prairie Days event items, and administrative items such as easements for 406 S. Main St and a new tree debris and yard waste disposal policy.
Council members also authorized adding CIT Sanitary Sewer Main Repairs to the Capital Improvement Plan for FY26 and approved a $31,600 design quote from MSA for tennis-court reconstruction. Council approved purchase of parts totaling $23,000 to repair the wastewater treatment plant’s ultraviolet disinfection system, to be funded in FY26 with the project moved into the CIP for longer-term planning.
On the EMS/Fire building project, the council instructed the contractor to fix asphalt and pavement defects to meet specifications rather than rely on the Street Repair Warranty Offer.
Other business included adding the south end of S. Veverka Drive street construction estimate to the CIP under FY2028; setting a public hearing on a proposed stop sign at N. East St. and E. Jefferson St. for the council’s June 11 meeting at 6 p.m.; and approving a Share Donation Agreement for a historic 1926 fire truck between the Prairie City Historical Society and the Fire Department.
