Board adopts comprehensive substance abuse prevention and response plan

The Newberg SD 29J Board of Directors voted on June 23 to adopt a comprehensive substance abuse prevention and response plan developed with counselors and community partners.
"All of the counselors ... have actually had their fingers in it in the creation of it," said the presenter (Dana), describing how counselors and community mental‑health partners contributed to the plan. The board discussed document placement and staff notification; Dana said the plan would be added to principal resources and posted so staff can access it.
A motion to adopt the plan was moved and seconded, and the board approved it unanimously, 6‑0. Board members asked how the plan would be shared with staff and whether annual reviews would take place. Dana said the plan will be rolled out to principals and that this year all staff will receive substance abuse training; in subsequent years, training will be for new staff.
The plan references community mental‑health partners and will be reviewed annually to ensure it meets state requirements and district needs. The board did not amend the document at the meeting and recorded the vote for the record.
