Preston applies for major planning grant, wins several smaller awards and approves $500 recreation scholarship

At the June 23 meeting, commissioners reviewed a slate of grant activity. The department applied for a $250,000 Community Investment planning grant intended to support planning for Town Hall, schools, the senior center and the park. A community garden grant was awarded and a rain garden is being installed at Town Hall.
Mark Simmons said the department received an Active Transportation grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation for $5,000 to buy bike racks, a repair station and to fund helmets and a bike-safety event. An ERTD marketing grant of $9,500 was awarded with a $10,000 town match; the commission contracted with a New England couple to produce promotional videos highlighting local businesses and attractions. Chelsea Groton Bank awarded about $8,000 to be used toward summer camp expenses. Simmons also said an application to the Eastern Connecticut Foundation was not awarded to Preston.
In final business, Commissioner Katie Iozzia moved and Nate Charron seconded approval of a $500 recreation scholarship; the motion carried. Commissioners noted prior discussions of the North Stonington sports bubble but did not take action on that subject at this meeting.
