Melbourne council unanimously adopts maximum property tax levy for FY 2026–27

Melbourne — The Melbourne City Council unanimously approved Resolution 26-03-01 on March 25, adopting the maximum property tax dollars requested for fiscal year 2026–27 after a City Clerk presentation clarified the levy’s local impact.
Mayor Mansager called the hearing to order at 6:30 p.m. and opened a public hearing on the proposed maximum levy. City Clerk Pothast presented the published levy request and addressed resident questions that arose from a county mailing about property assessment notices.
"The city's share of the property taxes would increase $10 from $499 to $509, an increase of 2%," City Clerk Pothast said as an example for a home whose assessed value rose from $100,000 to $110,000. Pothast also gave a commercial example: "a commercial property with a value of $300,000 that increased to $330,000, the City share would increase $2,170 to $2,375, or $205, an increase of 9.45%." She said the total levy increase amounts to $2,695 spread across the entire city.
There were no public questions or further discussion. Council member Lucas Hauser moved to close the public hearing; Beth Opperman seconded and the council voted "all ayes." Opperman then moved to approve Resolution 26-03-01, "Approving the Maximum Property Tax Dollars Requested for FY 26/27," with Hauser seconding. A roll-call vote was recorded as all ayes and the resolution was approved.
Council member Gary Fricke moved to adjourn; Beth Smith seconded. The meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
The action formalizes the city's maximum requested levy for FY 2026–27 as presented; the published notice of the proposed levy was made prior to the council's approval.
