Council discusses water outage, plant repairs and equipment purchase; meter wording clarified

Public works staff reported to the Canton City Council on Sept. 14 that an electrical boring operation caused a water main break on Sept. 8–9, producing an extended outage for many residents. Jon Nordsving said the city will submit additional wage and repair costs to contractor A-1 for reimbursement.
Nordsving also provided a wastewater treatment plant update, noting a mixer needs repair; the part is still under warranty and replacement parts are expected to be delayed because they are manufactured in Sweden. He described potential benefits of a utility locator and camera system and said the city is considering that purchase.
Later in the meeting the council approved clarified wording to the city’s water meter requirement to explicitly address multi-family housing units served by a single service connection; Councilor Kristy Ziegler moved the clarification and Councilor Carl Ernst seconded. The council will submit the proposed wording to the city attorney for review.
The council also agreed to prepare an Arlin Falck grant application to fund City Park shelter upgrades and include replacement of a former bus shed roof; Councilors Carl Ernst and Kristy Ziegler volunteered to represent the city at a joint meeting with the Mabel-Canton School Board regarding related matters.
