Canton council approves updated employee handbook with new PTO accruals

The Canton City Council on Sept. 14 approved updates to the municipal employee handbook and personnel policies, adopting a new paid time off (PTO) accrual structure for eligible employees.
Councilor Carl Ernst said he was not in favor of payouts to employees but moved to adopt the package that provides PTO to employees who work more than 32 hours per week. The council approved the policy; Councilor Kristy Ziegler seconded the motion. The meeting minutes record the approved accrual schedule as follows: 0–5 years — 100 hours; 6–10 years — 140 hours; 11–15 years — 180 hours; 15+ years — 200 hours. Employees may rollover up to 80 hours at year-end but total unused time may never exceed 280 hours. The existing vacation and sick-leave policy will be discontinued.
The council directed that the approved changes be added to the Employee Handbook for future council review and formal incorporation prior to implementation.
Separately, council agreed to prepare an Arlin Falck grant application to fund upgrades to the City Park shelter and to include replacement of the former bus shed roof in that request. Councilors Carl Ernst and Kristy Ziegler volunteered to attend an upcoming joint meeting with the Mabel-Canton School Board to represent the city.
