Caledonia council approves vacation of platted portion of N. Decorah at homeowners' request

The Caledonia City Council on Nov. 24 unanimously approved a request to vacate a platted portion of N. Decorah that lies in the front yard of Barb and Eric Hefte.
City Clerk/Administrator Jake Dickson introduced the request and said the Planning Commission recommended approval. Attorney Kayla Schmitz told the council the portion of street the couple seeks to vacate “has never been used as a public street,” and that staff did not expect any future public use or access concerns. Member Dave Fitzpatrick moved to approve the vacation; Member Bob Klug seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
The action removes the plat-level public-street designation for the specified portion of 504 N. Decorah and returns control of the land to the adjoining property owners, subject to the city’s formal vacation documentation. The council asked staff whether the change affected access to Water Tower 2; staff said there were no access concerns.
The decision came as part of the meeting’s new-business items and was recorded without amendments. There was no recorded public opposition during the meeting. The council’s approval will be processed through the city’s standard vacation paperwork and recording procedures.
The council adjourned at 7:03 p.m.
